How do I find an employer?

Go online

Use ApprentiCentre's Jobs Board, which has apprenticeship and traineeship vacancies currently available specifically for Western Australia.

Also search the job vacancy sites on the internet and research companies you are interested in to find further information and possibly vacancies.

The internet is the most popular and most up to date way of finding out about current vacancies.

Ask around

You may already know someone in your area of interest who may be willing to take you on. Tell your friends and family you're looking for an apprenticeship or traineeship. Ask them to ask around; you'll be surprised how many people connect with employers this way.

Newspapers

Check out newspapers for apprentice or trainee vacancies. Not every business advertises positions this way but it is worthwhile to see those that do. You may also come across a vacancy in an area that you hadn't previously considered.

Group training organisations

Contact a group training organisation which employs apprentices and trainees and places them with host employers. Lots of companies employ apprentices and trainees through these organisations. You can find out more about group training organisations here.

Direct contact

You can contact a business directly by visiting in person or by telephoning. Be well prepared with your research before attempting this method. Tips for directly contacting an employer include the following:

  • be well presented, not just in appearance but with what you are going to say if visiting a prospective employer
  • be polite and plan what you are going to say before phoning an employer
  • remember to be confident and ask questions
  • have a pen and paper ready to note any details from an employer
  • have an up to date copy of your resume ready to leave with an employer or to send in
  • send relevant businesses a covering letter and your resume introducing yourself
  • ask the prospective employer to keep your resume on file and give the employer a follow-up call a couple of weeks later
  • ensure you get a contact name for your follow call.

Yellow Pages

Use the Yellow Pages to find businesses in your area of interest. The Yellow Pages gives you a good idea of the number of companies in particular trades. You may also discover other opportunities in related fields. For instance, you may be interested in mechanics which includes heavy machinery, aviation, motorcycle, marine and small engine mechanics.
